Istanbul To Gobeklitepe And Harran 2 Day Tour (Option 2 A)
Starting from Istanbul or Izmir, explore the ancient pilgrimage cities in Turkey's mystical Southeast.
Gobekli Tepe is one of the world's most important archaeological sites. At 12,000 years old, it was built before the advent of writing or pottery, and is believed to be the world's oldest temple. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this fascinating site which is causing archaeologists to rethink their vision of early human history. Our professional guided tour includes a visit to the archaological site, as well as the Archaeology and Mosaic Museum in the city of Sanliurfa where you can learn more about this momentous discovery.
Sanliurfa is a city of huge religious significance, believed to be the birthplace of the prophet Abraham/Ibrahim, and the site of one of the most important events in the Bible and the Quran.
Harran is one of the world's oldest cities, and was the home of the prophet Abraham/Ibrahim, as referenced several times in the Bible. Later an important stop on the Silk Road, Harran has been an important centre since Mesopotamian times. Due to the hot climate here, the city has become known for its "beehive homes", which have a high domed roof and thick walls built from mud, specially designed to keep cool inside. Harran is also well known for its blue fabrics. Explore the mystical secrets of this ancient city with Alatur
You will be picked up from your hotel in Istanbul (or Izmir) and transferred to the airport where you will fly to Sanliurfa.
Upon arrival in Sanliurfa, our first stop is the ongoing archaeological dig at Gobekli Tepe, which is the oldest known temple in the world, pre-dating Stonehenge by 6000 years.
After a guided tour and photo opportunity at Gobekli Tepe, we return to Sanliurfa, where we will visit the Archaeology and Mosaic Museum, which is the largest museum complex in Turkey. Here you can see life size replicas of the megaliths from Gobekli Tepe.
After the museum, we visit the Abraham Pool. This is a highly sacred site for Christians and Muslims, as it is thought to be where Abraham/Ibrahim was thrown into the fire, before God turned the fire to water and turned the burning logs to fish.
Following the pool, we will continue to the cave which is believed to be the birthplace of Abraham.
In the evening, you will check into your hotel in Sanliurfa.
In the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel in Sanliurfa.
On this tour you will visit Harran, one of the world's oldest cities, the home of the prophet Abraham/Ibrahim, and later an important stop on the Silk Road.
You will have time to wander and photograph the “beehive houses”, which have survived for over 3000 years despite being built only from mud.
We will then visit the castle (Harran Kalesi), explore the city walls. Make your way to the ancient civilisation and sacred grounds of Sogmatar which welcomed the prophet Moses while being a different religion. The Grand Mosque is a stunning look into the history of the oldest Mosque in the area.
In the afternoon we will return to Sanliurfa airport where you will fly back to Istanbul (or Izmir). This is the end of the tour. If you have any enquiries about further tours or travel in Turkey, we will be happy to assist you!
