Anzac Day Centenary Commemorations, 25 April, Gallipoli

Anzac Day Centenary Commemorations, 25 April, Gallipoli Of particular interest to visitors from Australia and New Zealand will be the ceremonies to make the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. Whilst Anzac Day has become a day of remembrance for the contribution and sacrifice made by Australians and New Zealanders in all wars and conflicts, it was originally to honour those who died in Gallipoli during World War I, so the centenary is a particularly poignant occasion. Although Australians and New Zealanders fought as part of the Allied Forces against what was then still the Ottoman Empire, the commemorative events are organised in close cooperation with the Turkish government, reflecting the famous words written in 1934 by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the modern Republic of Turkey, to reach out to the mothers of all those who lost their lives:

Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country Therefore, rest in peace There is no difference between the Johnnies And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side Here in this country of ours You, the mothers Who sent their sons from far away countries Wipe away your tears Your sons are now lying in our bosom And are in peace After having lost their lives on this land they have Become our sons as well The commemorative services take place in a fairly remote part of the Gallipoli peninsula in the north-west of Turkey, and attendance is controlled by the Australian and New Zealand governments, with tickets issued by ballot. If you are unable to attend the commemorations in April, there will be another service on 6 August, at the Lone Pine Cemetery in Gallipoli, to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Lone Pine, and as one of the key strategic sites of World War I, the Gallipoli peninsula is worth visiting at any time of the year to reflect on the sacrifices made by previous generations.
